Vale Brian Markovic

Sadly we lost racing commentator Brian Markovic in the early hours of Sunday morning the 18th of July.

Brian had been in poor health for many years, diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2013. He was 70 years of age and passed away in care in Carrum Downs with his family by his side.

Brian enjoyed a wonderful career as a race broadcaster from the early 1970s until 2011. Starting out as a panel operator at Radio 3UZ in Bourke street Melbourne aged 16 in 1973. Brian called his first race at the Royal Show aged 16, a trotting exhibition race.  His first radio call was at the showgrounds working with John Russell, John gave Brian the chance to call his first live radio race, it was a disaster when there was a fall and a driverless horse headed back into the field and it was declared a “No Race”’

He went on to call thorougbreds and harness racing and quickly became the voice of the Valley  at Moonee Valley on Saturday nights for 2 decades.

Accurate and clear he loved the Valley and got the chance to call his own horse Blue Eagle winning the Victoria Derby in 1995, the call and moment his greatest feat.

Brian had a long and fruitful career at 3UZ, 3DB, Sport 927 and 3UZ Good Sports. As well Brian was a race caller and host for Sky Channel and called the VRC Spring Carnival for Sky in 1989 He was retrentched in 2011 from Sport 927and sadly disappeared from the air waves.

He was a great work mate and friend to so many of us especially the race callers.

He was married to Jenny, father of Sarah and Michelle and poppy to Jai and Koby.
